natural Cancer Therapy

Webster’s dictionary defines natural as “having a form found in nature; being true to nature and lacking artificiality.”

Beware that not everything found in nature is benign or even advantageous to an individual. Generally speaking, if a substance, process, or organism is found in great abundance, it is thriving, and is in harmony with nature. This is consistent with the theory of Natural Selection, which states that organisms with favorable traits are more likely to survive and reproduce. But there are also plants that are poisonous, natural disasters that occur regularly, and fatal diseases such as cancer and heart disease.

When an individual has severe coronary heart disease, there are different paths that may be taken in search of wellness: dramatic lifestyle changes, traditional medical treatment (pharmaceutical medicines, angioplasty/stent placement or cardiac bypass), alternative/complementary treatment, or a combination of the above. Is one approach better than another? If the approach that is taken affords both improved quality and quantity of life, clearly that was a path wisely chosen. Angioplasty and stent placement clearly are not natural, but these techniques do afford improved quality and quantity of life. If the individual’s lifestyle (diet and exercise) does not improve, eventually, this unnatural approach will no longer be life-saving.

Cancer is a natural disease process that is found in much of the animal kingdom. Unfortunately, our westernized lifestyles have unnaturally caused a continual increase in the incidence of cancer. So what is the Best approach to treat cancer? Should it be a natural cancer cure, through the consumption of plant or plant extracts and/or other alternative/complementary techniques? Should it be through chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgery?

The best approach to the treatment of cancer is to use any and all techniques or regimens that have shown efficacy in the treatment of cancer. For stage I and II cancers, often the traditional approach of surgery with or without adjuvant radiation/chemotherapy may be curative. Adopting a healthy lifestyle of proper diet and exercise may help ensure that the cancer does not return. For stage III and IV cancers, the prognosis is usually not as bright. A recent analysis performed by Australian oncologists suggests that the overall contribution of curative and adjuvant cytotoxic chemotherapy to 5-year survival in adults is 2.3% in Australia and 2.1% in the U.S. Clearly, chemotherapy, used by itself, for metastatic cancer, is merely palliative and not curative. To make matters worse, chemotherapy often makes the individuals extremely ill during their last several months of life.

At The Institute for Healthy Aging, we are constantly searching both the traditional literature (medline, pubmed) and the alternative literature for improved techniques regarding the treatment of metastatic cancer. We have found that the combination of a traditional approach (chemotherapy) with an alternative (natural) approach yields the most success.

At The Institute for Healthy Aging, our natural approach includes the following:
    1. Lifestyle changes – this includes educating the individual on optimal dietary intake to enhance immune function.
    2. Oral supplementation – this includes antioxidants, mixed mushroom extracts (using combinations of extracts that     were found efficacious in Japanese cancer studies), high dose melatonin, low dose naltrexone, as well as multiple     herbal supplements.
    3. Arimidex (aromatase inhibitor) – many of our cancer patients are placed on this drug because it inhibits the     production of estrogens. Oncologists are familiar with using this drug for prevention of recurrence of breast cancer     in post-menopausal women. At The Institute, we will often use Arimidex for lung and colon cancer as well. The     following studies support the use of aromatase for both lung and colorectal cancer.
